Q & A:

What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic, in short, is the act of specific, scientific adjustments of different body structures, especially the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the musculoskeletal system (muscles, bones). It involves neuromuscular physiology (the function of the nerves and muscles).

One well-respected leading doctor of chiropractic teaches: "Chiropractic corrects a serious form of stress, spinal nerve stress (subluxations) that interferes with normal body function. But chiropractic is also a philosophy that teaches us to remove all interferences to body function, and to seek out more natural, conservative methods before submitting to more radical (i.e. drug and surgical) approaches. Proper nutrition, exercise, rest, and emotional care, along with a healthy spine, are all vital for optimal well-being."
Dr. Tedd Koren

What is subluxation?
“A subluxation (a.k.a. Vertebral Subluxation) is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) moves out of position and creates pressure on, or irritates, spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves. How does this affect you? Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If you interfere with the signals traveling over nerves, parts of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their innate abilities. In other words, some part of your body will not be working properly.”

What is an adjustment?
"A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in the precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated, "locked up", or not moving properly. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is improved spinal function, improved nervous system function, and improved health."
Dr. Rob Jackson, Back Talk Systems

Do chiropractors "crack" backs?

No. Adjustment of a joint may result in release of a gas bubble between the joints that makes a popping sound – it’s exactly the same as when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint that results in gas bubbles being released. There is no pain involved.

What are the education requirements of Doctors of Chiropractic?

D.C.'s (doctors of chiropractic) actually receive more education than M.D.'s (medical doctors or doctors of medicine). "Educational requirements for doctors of chiropractic are among the most stringent of any of the health care professions," reports the ACA (American Chiropractic Association). They continue:

"Doctors of chiropractic — who are licensed to practice in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and in many nations around the world — undergo a rigorous education in the healing sciences, similar to that of medical doctors. In some areas, such as anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation, nutrition and public health, they receive more intensive education than their MD counterparts. Like other primary health care doctors, chiropractic students spend a significant portion of their curriculum studying clinical subjects related to evaluating and caring for patients. Typically, as part of their professional training, they must complete a minimum of a one-year clinical-based program dealing with actual patient care. In total, the curriculum includes a minimum of4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. The course of study is approved by an accrediting agency which is fully recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. This has been the case for more than 25 years."

Other government agencies have provided similar information, such as The National Institute of Health/Office of Science Education, who has concurred with the ACA's report:

"Chiropractic programs require a minimum of 4,200 hours of combined classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience."
